I recently came across some complaints from parents who are going through difficult times having to coach their young children in their Chinese home work. So, I thought I could share some of my personal encounters with Nicole.
I must confess, it wasn't easy at the intial stage. Nicole put up great resistance! She was still very much "English heavy" until she started learning some Chinese nursery rhymes which she loves. E.g. "Wo de hao ma ma" (my good mother - direct translation).
Then, I got her to read some chinese readers for the very first time over the past weekend. She seemed to be able to recognise most of the characters (I would say 85% of it) just after a few practices. I think the pictures gave away alot of clues which enabled Nicole to read along.
When Nicole was reading the sentence, "yi da qing zao nao zhong xiang" (ie. the alarm clock rang early in the morning). she stumbled upon the word "xiang" (meaning rang). She didn't know how to pronounce it but she could guess the word. So, she read " yi da qing zao nao zhong "ring ring""....I was like err??...very creative indeed! LOL :)
You are welcome to share your experiences too...just drop a line or two!
