My helper, Rose has been with me for almost 3 years now. Rose is my first helper and I am very thankful to have her. We work well together and the kids like her. I dont pick on her and leave almost everything to her. I dont set her work schedule. She does whatever she has planned for the day. At times, she doesnt wash the car for over 2 weeks...ho ho ho :( Lawrence and I would not even remind her. We just assume that she is probably too soaked up in other household chores.
I still remember her first day with us.
Rose " Ma'am, what do you want me to do?"
Me " Err...I dont know...why don't you just do whatever you can"
Then, off she went to pack up her own room, mop the floor and cook porridge for lunch. I was like err?....very good....very organised!
But today, Rose told me me something shocking! The police called her! The officer informed her that her friend whom she has lent money to, has been arrested and she (ie. Rose) is required to be present at the police station. OMG!! We have to send Rose to the police station tonight and see what is required of her :(

Is Rose from Indonesia? My helper is. She tells me some of her friends are always borrowing money from each other and there was one who promised to return but never did and after she had gone back those girls who lent her tried calling her many times but she didn't return calls.
My helper is more alert about things like that because she knows how difficult it is to earn them. She's on her 5th year now. I think when you let them do the schedule and organising, some are very good.
My previous helper before her, did not do much and I had her for a year.. I even found out she was selling cigarettes in the estates! It was my confinement nanny who 'opened' my eyes. The helper did not lift a finger during confinement because the nanny did everything, including helping to bathe my eldest daughter! Perhaps I was too lax on the maid and she took advantage of it.
So when Sofiya came, i gave her a time table for a rough schedule but i told her as long as she can complete her job properly, i have no reason to be unhappy about anything. She is truly a good worker, and usually after dinner, she completes her job for the day and goes back into her room for her own time.
Hi constance,
Rose is from the Philippines. She is diligent and she has a good heart. Many other maids take advantage of this. They keep on asking her to help and I once teased her " Rose, are you a banker? can I borrow some from you too?"
The amount she lent this time is astronomical in relative terms. I got a shock! I wouldnt have imagined any lending or borrowing to be a 3 figure sum.
I agree with you that we should treat our helpers well, give them their own space and have their own little corner. They are human beings too. We should treat others how we want to be treated.
